I have nightmares about my children dying.

No one likes to think their children are in pain. My mother hit me when I came home after many years of travel.

She was besought with demons, though.

The point is the same. A good parent worries for their children.

They were destroyed by a renegade. During a war.

Destroyed? That's unpleasant. My people are dead, too, but that's the sort of thing that happens when someone executes you. Or when you grow old. Old age causes a lot of deaths.

So does high cholesterol.

Is that why you have nightmares? Not the growing old and high cholesterol thing. The war.

There are a lot of things that can cause death.

I saw my whole planet be destroyed. We Time Lords are telepathic. The... [He stops there. He's not going to tell a stranger how hearing their dying screams had felt.] It's only natural I am affected by it.

[He gets it. Even if he doesn't know the whole story, he gets it.]

That's a terrible thing, to see your planet destroyed - but it's good that you're affected by it. You know how it feels to be affected by it, so you know how others would feel.

While it proves some people's opinion of me wrong, I don't quite see why that is the important part. I usually don't go around causing such destruction, unless I'm forced to in order to protect my people.

In any case, I shall save them still. Be it through this Admiral or some other way, no matter what I need to do.

Empathy is important. Even if you cause destruction, you should know how those people feel.

How can you save them?

It holds you back.

Through a deal with the Admiral, for example. [No, he's not going to tell you of the whole 'Let's blow up the universe!' plan. That generally doesn't get good reactions.]

It grows you.

You're a warden?

Does it?

No. But when not I, after... graduation, then one of the other Time Lords will make the deal. Or I shall use other means. I created a universe; I can save a planet.
